I am applying to colleges and i am about to begin my application essays. What should I write about?

I thought about writing an essay on basically about how i dont know what makes me different but explaining who I am. My teacher thought this would be a good idea (he also teaches at UPenn over the summer). Would this be a good idea? How could I develop it? would another topic be better? If you need a mini resume ill post it. Thanks
