Are the relics in Indiana Jones intentionally worthless?

The Ark basically killed anyone who opened it (and looked at the emerging spirits) and while the Holy Grail could heal (as it did Indy's father) it didn't provide any viable form of immortality as the guardian knight was frail and would have been unable to stop anyone from taking it if he wanted to.
